Founder of the Journal "Economics of Industry"
Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor
Honored Worker of Science and Technology of the Russian Federation
Laureate of the State Prize
Laureate of the Presidential Prize in the Field of Education

August 20, 1926 – March 8, 2018

  • Graduated with honors from the Metallurgical Faculty of the Institute of Steel in 1949. He was recommended for postgraduate studies at the Department of Economics and Production Management, which was headed by Academician I.P. Bardin, Vice-President of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
  • In 1953, he defended his Candidate's dissertation. In 1956, at his own request, he was assigned to the Dzerzhinsky Metallurgical Plant, where he worked as a casting and steelmaking foreman. In 1959, at the request of I.P. Bardin, he returned to the department.
  • A significant part of V.A. Romenets' scientific work focused on research into the efficiency of metal quality through refining remelting methods (electroslag, vacuum arc, electron beam, and plasma). This line of work enabled him to prepare and defend his doctoral dissertation, "The Problem of Steel Production Efficiency," in 1968.

All of V.A. Romenets' scientific and pedagogical activities were associated with the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys (now the National University of Science and Technology "MISIS").

In 1966, V.A. Romenets was appointed Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs.

In 1969, he was awarded the title of Professor and was elected Head of the Department of Economics and Production Management.

He took direct part in major scientific and methodological developments and their implementation into the educational process. Among these were: a scientifically based methodology for designing curricula using logical connections between academic disciplines, a unified plan for continuous training in fundamental academic disciplines, and a system for organizing independent student work was developed. A new profile for an economist–metallurgist was created, complete with corresponding laboratory equipment, which was successfully used until the transition to the Bologna system. In 1999, the curriculum design methodology was awarded the President of the Russian Federation Prize in the field of education.

Under the guidance and consultation of V.A. Romenets, more than 60 Candidate and Doctoral dissertations were defended.

V.A. Romenets was an initiator in implementing pedagogical projects at the University of Science and Technology Beijing, the National Institute of Technology in Kharagpur, India, as well as in the creation of the El-Tabbin Metallurgical Institute in Egypt and Annaba University in Algeria.

V.A. Romenets' educational and methodological activities were always combined with scientific work at metallurgical enterprises. His scientific interests focused on developing directions for improving the economic efficiency of metallurgical processes. On these issues, he and his students published more than 380 works, including 9 monographs, 65 author's certificates and patents, and 17 international publications.

In 1980, for work on creating steel for nuclear reactors, a team of authors including V.A. Romenets was awarded the USSR State Prize.

Recently, the development of mini-metallurgical plants has become increasingly relevant, raising the question of the optimal metallurgical unit for such plants. Under the leadership of V.A. Romenets, a new process, named "Romelt," was developed. This process does not require coke for iron smelting and allows iron to be obtained from low-grade iron ores and iron-containing waste that pollutes the environment. In addition to solving the primary task of producing iron, environmental problems are addressed, and additional technological heat energy is obtained. A promising direction is the processing of solid industrial and household waste using a liquid bath. NUST "MISIS" holds a patent for this process.

Patents for the "Romelt" process have been obtained in the USA, Japan, and India. Currently, metallurgical plants based on this technology are being built in Myanmar and Kazakhstan. The construction of units is being presented in India and Pakistan.

V.A. Romenets was awarded 5 orders, including the Order of the October Revolution and the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, IV degree, as well as 14 medals. These include the Medal for Labor Valor and the Medal for Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945.

V.A. Romenets was an "Honored Worker of Higher Professional Education of the Russian Federation" and held the title of "Honored Metallurgist."

The Russian Academy of Natural Sciences awarded V.A. Romenets the P.L. Kapitsa Medal, the V.N. Tatishchev Honorary Badge "For Service to the Fatherland," and the title "Knight of Science and Art."
